It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid or crystalline solid with a distinctive ketonic odor. The molecule exists in chair conformations, favoring the tert-butyl group in the equatorial position for steric stability. It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, fragrances, and agrochemicals.
